Stance gets a lot of hate around here, so in order to broaden our horizons a bit I came up with a challenge. Find a Stance car you think looks good. All forms and styles of car enthusiasts should feel welcome here. Stance fans, make your argument for the style and tell me why you like it. Stance haters, look and listen and see if you can come to an understanding.

any "stance" in a car should be a result of having a race-ready chassis and competition level design, not purposefully limiting the suspension travel of the car to impress people.

If we're talking functional stance then pretty much all touring cars
If you're talking show and looks mainly then you gotta go with something bagged, preferrably a big 4 door
I generally don't like big chorme wheels but that just looks straight up cool.

It depends on how we're defining stance. If you're referring to cars being lowered an excessive amount, I'd never do it myself, but I think it can be tastefully done depending on what kind of car is involved and what other modifications have been made.
If you're talking about giving the wheels a negative camber, I will never, ever understand that. It makes me physically uncomfortable to look at and ruins the car in a way that simply lowering (even by a lot) does not.

11/22/2013 at 08:25 | 0 |
Stance is more worried fitting the widest wheels and tires possible and getting the proper offset so that the lip of the wheel lines up with or extends just past the fender (flush). The place where the stance crowd faces the most criticism is when they start rolling fenders, stretching tires and running too much negative camber to make too wide a wheel fit. Basically trading function for form.

The S2000 in the original post looks quite tasty, but it's not been taken to a stupid extreme. Having said that I can't envision ever doing that to mine, I have underground parking and would scrape the damn thing all over the place and without a whole lot of setup time I think that will probably handle like a bag of spanners.

Can someone define "stanced" please? Does it only apply to cars that are low/slammed? Or would any vehicle with a modified suspension count?
If the latter, I present a JK-framed AEV Brute Wrangler TJ on Portals.
If this can be considered "stanced", it's a great one. It doesn't focus on 'moar higher', it focuses on getting the largest amount of ground clearance with the least amount of lift. A fender lift and rear wheel well trimming help fit bigger tires, and careful attention to control arm mounting, a space-saving transfer case cross member, the portal axles, and custom differentials all tuck in nicely close to the tub bottom. The steering and other suspension geometry concerns are correctly addressed to yield safe and effective off road performance and minimize the changes to the road manners.
Even if lifted Jeeps don't count as "stanced", the careful thought that this guy put into how each decision he made affects the overall physics of his vehicle should be put into the slammed guys rides.

I don't like stance not because it looks ugly (this S2000 does kinda look cool, tho), but how nonfunctional it is (and looks). What's the point of a $3k set of forged wheels if the car can't deal with a curb ? Let alone the karusell...
Somehow, it's somewhat the opposite of a Caterham. I love the way it looks because every detail is oriented towards lightness and handling. An R500 is objectively pretty ugly, but I just love its purposeful looks.

I see a lot of comments where people are asking why they should bother to try and like "stanced" cars. Have you considered that car enthusiasts can like many different things? This website seems to be getting very narrow minded in what they like and all others should simply be tossed aside because it does not meet the group's approval.
Yes, some of these stanced cars are ridiculously stupid and a hackjob was done to get them that way. Have you considered that the people in that community might also find it stupid/bad? Maybe if you learn that others can be enthusiasts in other car circles, it might improve the car scene as a whole. Instead of just saying "Why bother stancing your car, it's dumb!" you could instead give actual advice as to how to do it without completely wrecking the car. Airbags are popular right now for a very good reason - you don't run the risk of permanently damaging the car while in motion. Flip a switch and you get some ground clearance and suspension. Flip it back to "stance" it when parked. Clearly some of these builders don't have their heads up their ass.

There are many reasons to like or not like 'stance' but to really talk about it we need to take a step back.
Lowering a car past the point of performance enhancing is not new. Hot rodders have been doing it for the better part of half a century. Z-ing the frame on a 32 Ford. It started as part of making them fast and soon went way past. A lead sleds made from a '50 Merc, not in any way fast or practical.
Just because it's being done on newer cars does not make it a new trend.

I don't hate stanced cars. I just hate lowered cars which are done wrong. As stock, the wheelarches are concentric to the wheels. If you're going to lower a car, you need to make radical metalwork changes to make the wheel-arches fit the new wheel location. Otherwise you end up with this hideousness:

I am not a fan of stanced cars, and honestly do not understand the desire to have your car so low that a ridge in the road can rip your oil pan off.
But I can't hate them the way so many other seem to for the simple reason that they have decided on the aesthetic they wanted, have worked damn hard to get it, and are willing to live with the reduction in functionality that it has given them.
I can't hate that for the same reason I can't hate this:

Stickers, big exhausts, and glass packs are derided by the general community because they are meant to make a car look or sound like a race car, but are entirely cosmetic. They're all bark and no bite, as opposed to the much envied "sleeper car", which is all bite and no bark. Stance is just a more drastic showing of the same concept. Lowering the suspension and messing with camber is supposed to convey the image of a high performance vehicle, but will almost invariably result in compromised handling and an unsafe vehicle.

When I look at a car, I much prefer function over form. I would drive an Aztek if it was the lap record holder around VIR. Having said that I think that stanced cars are the opposite. It is all form over function but the form they are mimicking is the of race cars. Being super low to the ground and gobs of camber is like a caricature of a race car. Having said that, I am fine with stanced cars, I would prefer a fast car because I like speed but I can't hate someone's steez, some of them look pretty cool. Pic attached because stanced wagon.

I like a good number of Stanced cars. I have two conditions though (they're subjective, deal with it):
1. Moderation is key. If it doesn't go too far it's cool with me. These two wagons qualify:
2. I can sometimes forego #1 if the car had no performance aspirations anyway. These Mercedes are some of my all time favourite stanced cars:
And for a quick definition on how to do it wrong, just look at this Civic:
Ridiculous camber, ridiculous stretch. Never go full retard.
